The compassionate care shown to Madison Scriha’s grandmother inspired her career in nursing.
Maddison was still at Mirani State High School when her grandmother battled four types of cancer over 13 years.
“She was palliative while I was still in high school and the care she received in Mackay and Townsville was really inspirational
“When she passed away it still felt sudden, so I had a gap year after school. It was in that year I realised I wanted to help people and that nursing was the best way to do that.
“I’ve always had passion to help people, loved studying health and science at high school so I thought why not put those things together and make a difference.”
The Registered Nurse studied at the JCU Mackay campus and is now working on G2 Medical Ward for her graduate year.
Maddison said she enjoyed a career where she went home and felt she had achieved something.
“I think a good nurse needs a thick skin and needs to be strong, but also have a heart to be kind and compassionate. At uni they told us to treat every patient as your own family and treat them how you expect your own to be treated and that’s an important point to remember.”
