Interns rotate through Mackay Base Hospital, with specialty and subspecialty terms available in Medicine, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Anaesthetics, Mental Health, Radiology, General Practice and Rural Medicine.
Those on the Rural Generalist pathway will have the opportunity for allocations in Proserpine, Bowen and Sarina Hospitals.
The formal education program and support for interns is provided by the Medical Education Unit. Two hours of protected teaching each week consists of presentations, simulations and procedural skills workshops.
The Mackay Medical Staff Association provide social, educational and advocacy opportunities for members.

Resident medical officers are usually employed on a 12 or 24-month temporary contract.

International Medical Graduates (IMGs) seeking general registration through the AMC Standard Pathway can now be assessed using Workplace Based Assessment (WBA) at Mackay Hospital and Health Service.
The WBA program is an alternative to the AMC clinical exam component of the assessment pathway. It uses on the job assessment testing performance in the real environment facing doctors in their everyday clinical practice.
