The Mackay Birth Centre has welcomed the donation of two privacy screens thanks to the volunteers at the Iona West Men’s Shed.
Friends of The Birth Centre treasurer Bec Lawler said the screen could be used by women during birthing to create a more private environment.
“The screens have been very popular, for example one woman hung fairy lights on it to help create a relaxing intimate birthing experience,” Mrs Lawler said.
The screens can also be used at outdoor events to display photographs and other information.
“It’s all part of the Birth Centre offering women the opportunity to birth in a comfortable, personalised, home-like setting,” Mrs Lawler said.
“The Friends of the Birth Centre rely on fundraising and donations to support the Birth Centre and make additions such as the privacy screens,” she said.
Iona West Men’s Shed co-ordinator Chris McAdam said the men designed the screen based on a photograph of one in use at the Cairns Birth Centre.
Mr McAdam said the group was happy to support community projects, and had also created the chemo bell for the Children’s Ward at Mackay Base Hospital.
“The material is supplied to us by the organisation and we donate our time and skills to make it happen,” he said.
Men’s Shed volunteers come from all walks of life and enjoy catching up with each other.
“We are all men with time on our hands and we like to do something meaningful with that time, and that often involves supporting community organisations.
The Men’s Shed is open four days a week, Monday 1pm- 4pm, Tuesday and Wednesday 9am-4pm and Saturday 9am-1pm.
