The Mackay Hospital and Health Service (HHS) has welcomed nine new members to the Consumer Advisory Partners (CAP) group, increasing the number of representatives to 16.
The CAP represents and provides a voice for consumers, carers and members of the community from the Mackay, Whitsunday and coal fields regions.
Mackay HHS Chief Executive Jo Whitehead said it was great to see the group come to fruition again for a second year.
“Our commitment is to ensure the voice of our consumers, carers and community is at the heart of everything we do,” she said.
“Putting the needs of our consumers at the centre of service delivery helps us to continue on delivering quality and safe care, in turn supporting our consumers on their journey through the healthcare system.”
Earlier this year applications were sought from consumers, carers and members of the community with an interest in contributing to the future of health.
“We received a large number of quality applications from across the health service, with each person having their own story to share about their experience with healthcare, either personally, or as a carer or community member,” she said.
“From these applications I am delighted to say the majority of last year’s members have returned and we have been able to grow the group in size and diversity.
“Also we have once again attracted participation from the Northern Queensland Primary Healthcare Network and Mackay Regional Council, which are organisations we are keen to work with to improve healthcare in our community.”
Significant progress has been made since the health service’s first engagement strategy was launched in 2014 and the appointment of the first CAP group in March 2016.
“Our community and the voices of the people we serve play an essential role in shaping the future of healthcare service for our region,” she said.
“I thoroughly enjoy meeting with the CAP and hearing about their lived experiences. They are all passionate about how they can make a difference to healthcare for the community.
“We have welcomed an excellent group of people and I am excited for our health service to continue to strengthen relationships with our communities through groups such as the CAP.”
