A heartfelt thank-you can do so much to lift our spirits.
To the team at Proserpine Hospital,
One year ago, we were involved in a buggy accident on Hamilton Island. There were eight family members involved, and everyone was treated at different hospitals. Myself, my husband and our two young children were treated at Proserpine.
We have had a lot of time to think about what happened to us on that awful day. It has been and continues to be a long process of recovery. But I would like you to know how immensely grateful we are to everyone at Proserpine who treated us that day.
When we look back at our very short time at the hospital we feel a little overwhelmed by the chaos that it was, and because of this we cannot remember the names and faces of every kind and wonderful person that took care of us.
A few people continue to stay fresh in my memory and I would very much like for them to know that although they did the most wonderful of jobs a year ago – they continue to be in our thoughts, and will never be forgotten – genuinely. I am so immensely grateful to these people who not only treated us, but cared for us – above and beyond what I would have deemed to be the norm.
Please, please pass our thanks on to everyone at Proserpine, but if you can in particular pass our thanks to the following names that I remember:
Dr Chris Gill who treated my facial wounds, and was by far the gentlest and kindest doctor possible. I barely had a chance to thank him, but I can still see his face and will never forget it.
Dr Mel Sloane who looked after us, kept me informed of my sister’s condition in Townsville and was so incredibly kind and generous. She gave me her own child’s car seat so that I could transport my son safely to Townsville – knowing how scared we were. She cannot possibly know what this meant to me and I would like her to know that I am still so touched by what she did.
Nurse Unit Manager Lisa Milne – this lady was so kind and compassionate. At a time when I was feeling so awful, she made sure that my son, Myles, was spoiled. She bought toys, colouring in books, stories. She even gave him her own stash of chocolate when he didn’t like his choice from the vending machine!
Anne Eaton, the midwife who arrived in the middle of the night, and took my husband and baby girl, Mabel, to the aircraft to be transported to Townsville. This amazing lady not only cared for me after they had gone, but continued to stay in touch during our time in Townsville and after we came back to the UK.
We have said to each other on many occasions that if such an accident had happened in the UK, we do not think our recovery would have been quite the same. The level of care and attention that we received from all of you – those whose names I can remember and those I can’t, was truly amazing, and I thank you for that.
I want to say that to you, we were just another group of patients to be treated, but to us you have been, and continue to be so much more than that.
Thank you forever more. All our love and gratitude.
